Very difficult to describe, a sort of high octane, harmonic fusion of indie, folk, rock, Americana, new wave, ska and rockabilly – original and unique.
As a band all our influences are broad – we all bring something totally different to ‘the mix’ and we think that's what makes all our songs sound so different and it's what makes playing in and (hopefully) watching the Hums seem so interesting. Influences range from Tom Waits, Nick Drake and Radiohead to The Wedding Present, The Pixies, Steely Dan, The Violent Femmes, Belle & Sebastian, Johnny Cash, The Kinks and Eels.
The Hums like to think we have thousands of adoring female (and male) fans and yes we do have the regular entourage of groovy dancing Humettes (Hi Jo, Anna, Tina, Babs, Janet, Nicky….and Dave!) sometimes it's just a barrage of undies!
These usually go fine – just the usual 'We've never played that before!” – 'Yes we bloody have!' type thing – but on the whole Chris sulks and Mr. Sensible (Paul) keeps us all in order!
Our 3rd CD 'Kick' was a real milestone for us, the first to feature all Hum originals with the present line up. There's ten songs and an interesting extra all recorded at the musicians CO-OP by Ian and mixed by Ash. We think it really captures the diversity and energy of our unique sound. Song subjects range from fatherhood(Kick), to separation and loss(Howard Road,Rider) to bad girlfriends (Don't Ever Say I Told You So), to youthful exuberance (Do Wop In The Dark), to a track inspired by actor Richard E Grant's father- the African influenced 'Thoughts Run Faster Than Your Feet'. Interestingly enough 'extra track' the Lancaster national anthem, 'Lunar Landscape', has almost reached near legendary status (and a life of it's own) after 300 local children sang it at the recent children's music festival in Lancaster Town Hall – a real honour for the band. The ten sons featured on the album take listeners on a musical journey from Texas and California, to Manchester…via New York, Bolton le Sands and Soweto. We think people will really enjoy such a diverse selection of music – there's something for all tastes.
Yes, the boys (and girl) in Mostly Hums would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all our family and fans, local press, fellow musicians and venues who have supported our music over the years. We look forward to making new friends in the future so pop down and see us live when you can.
Things are looking really good in The Hums camp. We released our 4th CD, 'Jump The Shark', in 2009 which is available in HMV as well as through Mostly Music. The provisional title was 'Tonight' until Franz Ferdinand nicked it. It includes new classics such as Jumperlooza, Wide Sargasso Sea and Palomine as well as Yazarians Lament/Spinning Around and The Moon Has Turned To Rust. Also keep your eyes peeled for further website developments – nice one Danny!! we owe you beers.
